The title is a pun of Deep Purple's live album "Made in Japan" (1972).

The bootleg reissues include the other songs that were played at the concert and not on the EP, plus Montrose's live cover "I've Got the Fire" that appears as the b-side of the single "Sanctuary" (1980).

Iron Maiden 於 1981 年發行的EP《Maiden Japan》（在日本標題為《Heavy Metal Army》）是這支重金屬傳奇極具歷史意義的現場 EP，記錄了他們首次踏上日本國土的狂熱瞬間。這張作品於名古屋厚生年金會館錄製，當時正值不列顛重金屬新浪潮（NWOBHM）橫掃全球的巔峰期，整張專輯洋溢著年輕樂團特有的焦躁與衝勁。最令樂迷津津樂道的是，這是初代主唱 Paul Di'Anno 在離團前的最後正式官方錄音，他那充滿龐克色彩的粗獷嗓音，賦予了 〈Running Free〉 與 〈Killers〉 等名曲一種截然不同的街頭侵略感。
這張 EP 的封面藝術同樣富有傳奇色彩，標準版封面是吉祥物 Eddie 手持武士刀，這不僅是對日本文化的致敬，也成為後來樂團視覺設計的重要靈感。有趣的是，當年曾有一個極稀有的委內瑞拉版本，封面竟是 Eddie 提著主唱 Di'Anno 被斬下的首級，這反映了當時團員間的緊張關係，隨後該封面便遭到撤換。雖然《Maiden Japan》收錄曲目不多，但它精準捕捉了 Iron Maiden 轉型為全球巨星前的原始生命力。那種如暴風雨般的雙吉他編制與 Steve Harris 標誌性的低音跳動，讓這張現場錄音成為金屬史上公認的最佳現場 EP 之一，更是老派樂迷心中無法取代的經典篇章。
